Open door appears on tour

Open door appears on the 10 second torch tour of Scotland by Paul Thomson #hag .The tour is described here http://10seconds.posterous.com/ have a wee look it well worth it .

Plain Lazy

So it been a while since I last posted anything on our blog and there have been so many changes .The biggest change was our worker Anne decided it was time to move on and get a new Job.At the time this seemed like a blow to what we were trying to achieve, but as is the way one door shuts and another opens. We now have new worker (Carol) who works slightly less hours but has gradually taken things in a slightly different direction.Building on all the hard work Anne put in to the community Carol is now working with small groups of women and there kids.

When we have time we will try to put some more detail to what we do and tell you some of the good stories of what is going on .

A new day

As some of you might be aware our worker Anne has decided to move on after working with us for a long time.Anne has a new challenge working for Venture trust Scotland http://www.venture-trust.org.uk/ we wish Anne well and thank her for all her hard work .Anne worked very hard for us and helped us all to see that Open Door was something worthwhile.

We now have different set up with different people .Carol will work for us initially for less hours but hopefully building that up as the project grows. She will have two volunteers working with her.Anne Queen and June-Marie.We are hopeful that his team approach will find its feet and begin to take the project forward.I feel excited at the prospect of the team being able to move the project on to the next level (whatever that might be).My only regret is that we are not able to do this while Anne was here. But I guess in some ways that's the nature of pioneering a new work.

The new Guys start today after some handover work was done with Anne and them over the last few weeks. So here we go on the next part of our adventure with God and the people of Bridgeton

What we do

At Open Door we aim to support young people and their families. As an organisation we have worked with youth for a number of years and have also supported parents by offering various groups and classes that we feel have been helpful to the tem. We would now like to link the two and help families work through any difficulties they might be going through by learning to communicate more effectively and understanding each others point of view.
We will do this by meeting with the young people and their parents/carers to establish whether or not we can be can be of any help and if so how we can do that. At the moment we offer a range of group work opportunities, but will be careful only to invite people to a group relevant to their situation.
There may also be some one to one work initially with the parent/carer or the young person. Again this depends on the situation and will only be offered if relevant.
Below are examples of some of the groups we offer.
Season for Growth
Seasons for Growth is a loss and grief education programme catering for young people aged 6 - 18 years. The core element of this programme is the promotion of social and emotional wellbeing for young people who have experienced significant loss due to death or family breakdown.
Season for growth consists of 8 sessions plus two reconnectors.
The eight sessions aim to help the children:
Acknowledge the reality of change and loss in life
Learn about possible reactions to loss or change
Develop skills to assist in processing change
Explore ways of letting go and moving forward
The reconnectors give the participants the opportunity to meet again to discuss any issues which may have arisen since they completed the programme.
Seasons for Growth is now available for adults.

Girls@opendoor
Girls@opendoor is an issue based programme for girls aged 12-18. The issues discussed depend on the group as they themselves identify the issues that they are concerned about. Some of the topic covered include: health & wellbeing, relationships, beauty & body image. The depth of work will very much depend on the age and experiences of the girls involved. We would try to bring together girls of a similar age. Through the discussions and group work activities we aim to promote good communication and enable the girls to think about the choices they make in life.
How to Drug Proof your Kids
This is a course for parents or people looking after children and helps them identify ways of steering their children away from the harmful use of drugs. Parents are able to learn from each other and hopefully develop a support network.
Talking to your Child about Sexual Health
Participants will acquire the skills and knowledge they need to talk to their children about the sensitive issue of Sexual Health.
Time for yourself
A six week programme which encourages mothers (or fathers) to take time out and looks at different ways they might do that. It is a fun and relaxing programme. Topics covered are:
 Introduction - Time for Me
 How can I help Myself
 Healthy Body
 Relaxation
 Time Out
 Pamper Time

open door update

The project has really started to take some shape now.A few weeks ago we met to try to help our worker (Anne) have a bit more direction. She told us that things were going well and that as a project we were starting to get some referral's from other projects in the east end of Glasgow. After talking and sharing and some good questions we were able to begin to see a shape forming. We have always wanted to be involved with young people and there families. So we are now able to think more clearly about what it is we can offer them.As well as the current group work with young people Anne and Carol will start a Seasons for Growth group next week with some of the young people that have been referred to us .http://www.seasonsforgrowth.co.uk/We will also look to get some training with Seasons for Growth for the adult classes. This will hopefully happen over the next few months. We have also started to get some more volunteers to help out throughout the working week.It will take some time to train them and find what skills they have but this means Anne will have some other people around the place during the working day.As a side to this we have seen a few workers from other projects that Anne has known start to come about the church itself. This is indeed a busy time for us all but a very exciting time as we can now start to see the possibilities for the Open Door project. In order to get things up and running I will start to publish these post on the Open Door blog as well as here .The link can be found on the link bar at the top of this blog.http://opendoorbridgeton.blogspot.com/
